Friendships Day

Firstly, Happy Friendships Day to all the readers. Although there are already a lot of articles and details about this, but while going through the details I found a lot of different stories about the start of this day and it celebration. As for records they might be all sayings only, anyway just pointing down here few common facts that seem to be relevant.

When is Friendships Day celebrated?

Clearly, International Friendships Day is celebrated on 30th July, and in other parts of the world including India its celebrated on 1st Sunday of August.

How did friendships day start?

There are a lot of sayings about this:

One saying is, Friendships Day was originated by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be 2 August.

Another saying, is that in the US in the year 1935, on the first Sunday of August, the US government killed an innocent man, in whose memory a friend had committed suicide. This was followed by the proposal by the South American people to celebrate this day as International Friendship Day in front of the U.S. government.

Another story comes up that the idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the River Paraguay about 200 miles north of Asuncion, Paraguay.

On 27 April 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 30 July as official International Friendships Day. However, some countries, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August.

Symbol of Friendships Day

In honor of Friendship Day in 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. The event was co-sponsored by the U.N. Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises, and was co-hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford.
